SEBASTIAN YOUNG

sebastian young was born on october 10th, 1986 in new york state. mothered by a seventeen - year - old amanda young until he reached the age of three, but such a life was cut short due to her wrongful incarceration — devised by detective eric matthews. there never was a father in the picture for sebastian — and his grandparents were out of the question due to their abusive ways — so he was taken in by the state. that’s when his troubles began. he always was less able than other children: both in intellect and athleticism. this caused downfall in his self-esteem, and established an unhealthy relationship with consumption. weight and mental health issues, all before the age of eleven. that was the time in his life when he began standing up from himself. violence rose in him, and by the time he was in his mid-teens, it had become so normalised that one day without the adrenaline drove him insane. that wasn’t the only difference, though. it was middle and high school that boosted his confidence, realising that he was much smarter than he ever gave himself credit for. such a thing manifested into narcissism, and he clung on-to that as if his demeanour depended on it.
by the age of fifteen, sebastian had created a reputation for himself. at the care home, he was the somewhat rebellious, yet, loving boy who always took the time to engage with the younger residents because of his own desolation at their age. at school, though, he was egotistical, aggressive and always picked the first fight. granted, some of these were in an attempt to help others, but the majority were just out of his own pleasure. that’s why he had more enemies than acquaintances, and more acquaintances than friends. even his devoted girlfriend couldn’t quite keep up with him — and he couldn’t keep up with her. by that age, he was deep into questioning his sexual orientation, and the rough exterior was a mask so he’d never have to expose his indecisive mind. ironically, it was his ways that caused the secret to unravel. he was taken off the baseball team for punching another player, and then he proceeded to attack his headmaster. sebastian got the worse end of that fight, but he knew that his past actions would not support the claims he so dearly wished he could bring forward. he was expelled, and that’s when he confided in another boy at the house. the two had always been relatively close, but the incident solidified something. that was when sebastian lost his virginity at age sixteen, and that was also when everyone found out. the carers were far from pleased — and just like they had in previous years — they beat him profusely. it was a few days later that he fled, taking only his rucksack, glasses and old baseball jersey — along with the clothes on his back, of course. he travelled a few cities over, and that was when things really turned upside down.
finding himself upon a brothel — mistaking it for a simple bar — the boy, luckily, found work as a tender. his appearance has always been that of someone much older, and lying was easier than he had anticipated. whilst he did his job, it occurred to him that there was a possibility that conversion therapy may be affective on him, and so he used the little wages he had to pay to have sex with women. these prostitutes were much older than him, and even though it is already considered statutory rape, some went further once sebastian was blacked out. he has no recollection of this, but he has his assumptions on whether or not it did or did not happen. eventually, after countless encounters of that sort, he decided to stop trying — partly because of how it was making him feel. uncomfortable; dirty. all the negative emotions possible. he continued to stay there for employment reasons until december of 2003. that was when the brothel was busted by authorities, but sebastian managed to get away with his nose clean. it was a talent that he mastered well, but it may not have been the wisest decision. not with what came of his life next.
peer pressure to fit in with gangs amongst the streets led to drugs being abused. at the brothel, sebastian had already tried methylenedioxymethamphetamine — otherwise known as ecstasy. even before that on halloween of 2002, he had smoked cannabis, but these drugs were not to be matched. ecstasy was a dangerous combination for the boy due to the released of serotonin, but these drugs were the likes of cocaine and diamorphine (heroin). the addiction caused his speech and brain function to suffer greatly, as well as his overall moral outlook. he travelled back to his native city at this time, and that’s when he acquainted himself with a young man at his former school. the individual was stressed — about to become a teenage father and having to look after a fatherless home. sebastian knew this struggle, and so narcotics became their bonding purpose. it was at least seven months into this friendship when sebastian met john kramer. he was high; a little drunk. soaked by the night’s rain. john tried to reason with him, and then he got the boy’s name, age and city of birth. that was enough, especially with who sebastian resembled — even if that was only known to john. it was a month or so after this encounter that things took a turn for the worse.
one of the prominent gangs that sebastian was affiliated with began to find firearms in their possession, and any wrongdoers would have to suffer from a muzzle. it was sebastian’s dear friend that had tried to steal from them in order to provide for his family and himself, and due to his ties with the boy, it was his job to turn the gun against him. the intention was not to kill, but to seriously injure just enough for a lesson to be taught. not such a thing was executed, though — only a human. manslaughter. instinct told sebastian to flee, and so he did. he didn’t get very far, because his lack of wisdom brought him to the street corner he had set up for himself, and it was there that he was kidnapped. then he was tested, and the repercussions of that were his arms being ripped upwards — deep, permanent marks left behind. for a time, it was only john and doctor lawrence gordon that knew who he was and why he had to survive. that’s why the bond between the boy and the doctor is so significant.
i. sebastian is unaware of who his father is and has never met him nor had contact with him. as far as he’s concerned, fathers aren’t of any use to anybody.
ii. he’s an extremely talented artist but is reluctant to tell anybody so. in his mind, the narcotics have destroyed all the talent in him.
iii. as well as being an artist, he excels at baseball. his preference is batting, although he can do any position to the same ability. ever since he got into the sport, he’s always supported the new york mets.
iv. sebastian is terrified of birds. even the sight of one will cause him to tense up and potentially act out.
